Nigerian man was in terror database

Nigerian man was in terror database
http://waronyou.com/topics/nigerian-man-was-in-terror-database/
A Nigerian man charged Saturday with attempting to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day was listed in a U.S. terrorism database after his father told State Department officials that he was worried about his son’s radical beliefs and extremist connections, officials said.

The suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was granted a two-year tourist visa by the U.S. Embassy in London in June 2008 and has traveled to the United States at least twice before, officials said. His name was added to a catch-all terrorism-related database last month, when his father reported concerns about his son’s “radicalization and associations” to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a senior administration official said.

Abdulmutallab, 23, was subdued by passengers and crew members aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Friday after he ignited an explosive device that set his pants leg and part of the airplane, which was preparing to land in Detroit, on fire. The incident marks the latest apparent attempt by terrorists to bring down a U.S. aircraft through the use of an improvised weapon and set in motion a series of urgent security measures that disrupted global air travel during the frenetic holiday weekend.

Forgive the pun, but this would seem to be something of a no-brainer. Quoth the levitating Lotus: “Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone as we’re approaching this new year, I felt it was time to let go of some things that have been gathering dust. Some old things, and some new things, I tried to pick out tracks that I know yall haven’t heard yet so there should be surprises around every turn. can’t believe i’ve been making tracks for over 10 years now..That said, there’s so much to learn still. I hope you all enjoy this mix. Thanks to the Gaslamp Killer for doing an incredible job on this.

Fractures in the Truth Movement, Part III The Fissure Becomes a Gulf

Fractures in the Truth Movement, Part III
The Fissure Becomes a Gulf

http://waronyou.com/topics/fractures-in-the-truth-movement-part-iii/
http://waronyou.com/topics/fractures-in-the-truth-movement/
http://waronyou.com/topics/fractures-in-the-truth-movement-part-ii/

“Strange powers have our enemies, and strange weaknesses! But it has long been said: oft evil will shall evil mar.”

–J.R.R. Tolkien, from The Two Towers

“This fracture in the truth movement between the anti-zionists and the Alex Jones automatons was building gradually for a few years until [Jason] Bermas blew the issue wide open on Alex Jones’ show in April. Since then the fracture has become a fissure, and the fissure will soon become a gulf.“

–from Part 1 of “Fractures in the Truth Movement”

As covered in part 1 of this series, the split between anti-zionists and those who equate anti-zionism with anti-semitism was blown wide open last April by Jason Bermas of Loose Change fame, while guest-hosting the Alex Jones Show. He accomplished this by berating a caller who had the audacity to ask about Jewish control of the Hollywood media. This split widened to a fissure with the firing of Jeff Rense from GCN’s radio network, with Texe Marrs writing an article critical of Jason Bermas, and with Nathaniel Kapner opening the debate on whether Alex Jones is a zionist shill–or just a useful idiot.

Well, a new fissure has appeared between Alex Jones and those who honestly seek the truth in politics and history, which has been building gradually–along with the anti-zionist rift–since the PrisonPlanet.com forums were created in 2007. The two rifts, side by side, represent what has now become a gulf between the Alex Jones world and the rest of the war for truth and justice. As explained in Parts 1 and 2 of this series, when Alex Jones had the PrisonPlanet.tv forums deleted in a hissy fit live on air, it was just before this time that the PrisonPlanet.com forums were created. Because the members only .tv forums were un-moderated, Alex Jones equipped the new free forums at PrisonPlanet.com with moderators who would make Pol Pot flinch. These moderators have been suppressing the flow of information on PrisonPlanet.com’s forums ever since.

What information is there to suppress on an internet forum, you ask? It’s funny you should ask, because that’s one of the things I’d like to address. I made the case for anti-zionism in part 2 of this series, and it just so happens that this is one of the subjects under extreme scrutiny at PrisonPlanet.com. It seems Alex Jones has a reason to suppress any talk of Jews or zionism. I will leave it up to you to decide why that might be, although if you’ve been reading this series, I think I’ve made my opinion on the matter abundantly clear. When someone claims that Arabs own Hollywood, I have to sit back and smile at the sheer arrogance of the statement. Not to mention, my first thought is: “Who the hell is paying this guy to say that?” Yet Alex Jones has made this exact statement not once, but a number of times.

And how does one go about suppressing the flow of information on an internet forum? How do you go about the seedy business of appearing to be for truth and uncovering political crimes, while hiding and removing any trace of your own lies and crimes? It’s easier than you may think. People who are used to being lied to their entire lives sometimes have a hard time seeing through new lies, even if this is their main desire. But as with all lies, eventually the jig is up. A home built upon a foundation of lies is no home at all…

Following are four main tactics I have observed, which are used by internet forum moderators to suppress the free flow of information:

The first tactic is ridicule. Any idea outside of the accepted bubble must be ruthlessly vilified by both moderators and sycophantic registered users alike.

The second tactic is moving threads to “dunce” boards, which are basically forum boards where moderators can quarantine all “kooky” threads. This effectively quarantines the idea of the thread, along with the thread itself and the person who posted the thread. New users naturally shy away from these boards, not wishing to be outcasts. Included in this tactic is changing the title of threads to make the poster appear ignorant or even hateful, and merging “dunce” threads with other “dunce” threads in order to confuse the issues.

The third tactic is deleting posts and threads altogether… Forum posts which are critical of the moderators, or whose topics are taboo, can be simply deleted.

The fourth tactic is banning registered members from using and viewing the forums outright. The ban can be temporary or permanent. This is the tactic that appears to be the downfall of the PrisonPlanet.com forums.

PrisonPlanet.com’s forum moderators apply all of the above tactics to their forums with ruthless efficacy. Many users become disgusted by the blatant abuse of authority, and simply leave, not waiting to get banned or ridiculed. So some see the scam for what it is, and leave on their own terms. Others, as mentioned earlier, are too used to being manipulated to see through the charade.

There is an immediate danger the internet poses for the powers-that-be, and those powers have every motive–financial and political–to attempt to stifle dissent on the internet. It only makes sense considering the effort they’ve expended on suppressing truth through the mainstream media. They would be stupid to not attempt control of their opposition…

The Rich Have Stolen The Economy

The Rich Have Stolen The Economy

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s closest aides earned millions of dollars a year working for Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and other Wall Street firms. Bloomberg reports that none of these aides faced Senate confirmation. Yet, they are overseeing the handout of hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer funds to their former employers.

The gifts of billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money provided the banks with an abundance of low cost capital that has boosted the banks’ profits, while the taxpayers who provided the capital are increasingly unemployed and homeless.

JPMorgan Chase announced that it has earned $3.6 billion in the third quarter of this year.

Goldman Sachs has made so much money during this year of economic crisis that enormous bonuses are in the works. London Evening Standard reports that Goldman Sachs’ “5,500 London staff can look forward to record average payouts of around 500,000 pounds ($800,000) each. Senior executives will get bonuses of several million pounds each with the highest paid as much as 10 million pounds ($16 million).“

In the event the banksters can’t figure out how to enjoy the riches, the Financial Times is offering a new magazine–”How To Spend It.” New York City’s retailers are praying for some of it, suffering a 15.3% vacancy rate on Fifth Avenue. Statistician John Williams (shadowstats.com) reports that retail sales adjusted for inflation have declined to the level of 10 years ago: “Virtually 10 years worth of real retail sales growth has been destroyed in the still unfolding depression.”

Merck Wins U.S. Approval for Gardasil Vaccine in Boys

Merck & Co.’s Gardasil, a vaccine used to prevent cervical cancer in women, won U.S. regulatory approval for preventing genital warts in boys.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the vaccine for use in males ages 9 to 26, Merck said today in a statement.

Gardasil protects against a sexually transmitted infection called human papillomavirus, or HPV, that can lead to cervical cancer in women and genital warts and cancer of the penis and anus in men. Gardasil, approved for females ages 9 to 26, is given mostly to school-age girls as a U.S.-recommended routine vaccination. Expanding the shot’s use could revive sales, which declined 5 percent last year, analysts have said.

[Uruknet 55929 13-jul-2009 03:07 ECT] Marxists Must Stand Firm Against Ahmadinejad Open letter to the workers of Venezuela on Hugo Chvez's support for Ahmadinejad

....The capitalist government of Iran has no fundamental disagreements or contradictions with US imperialism. It is in a 'cold war' with America and when it receives enough concessions, it will quickly enter into political dealings with the US and will turn its back on you. Indeed, the Iran regime has already helped the Americans in their military invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq - and installing the puppet regimes of Karzai and Maliki through significant trade, security and other deals. The capitalist government of Iran, despite the current apparent differences, is busy in close negotiations with the Obama government on resolving the problems of Afghanistan. This government, despite the "anti-imperialist" rhetoric, is heading towards re-establishing old links with the US. Ahmadinejad's selection demonstrates the final turn of the regime towards resolving its problems with imperialism. Despite all the "enmity" and "anti-imperialist" gestures the regime is ready to resolve all its differences with America...

In support of Obama"s search for Hip-Hop with a positive message: The Real Thing, Hip-Hop at its Best (Part 2)

There has been a lot of talk lately regarding one of the main elements of Hip-Hop, Rap: Sthe rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes, wordplay, and poetry.⬝

This discussion has even reached the presidential palace. In 2008 Obama stated that:

SHip-Hop is not just a mirror of what is, it should also be a reflection of what can be⬦ Imagine something different, imagine communities that aren"t torn up by violence, imagine communities where we are respecting our women, imagine communities where knowledge and reading and academic excellence are valued. Imagine communities where fathers are doing right by their kids. That"s also something that has to be reflected.

SArt can"t just be a rear view mirror, it should have a headlight out there, you know, pointing towards where we need to go. [So Hip-Hop needs to have] the audacity of hope.⬝

Based on the above comments, I can only assume that Obama is in search of hip-hop with a positive message. He is looking for leadership through music that can help us build sustainable communities for future generations - music that not only reflects reality, but also provides us with solutions. As he puts it, hip-hop that has the Saudacity of hope⬝.

Obama"s search is admirable. One of the best ways to disseminate information and help improve our society is by sharing a positive message through music. After all, it is not just change that we want, but positive change.

Being a hip-hop aficionado, I believe that I can help Obama in this search.

Below you will find some amazing hip-hop that you will most likely never hear on commercial corporate mainstream media: the real thing, hip-hop at its best sharing a positive message that has the Saudacity of hope⬝ (excerpts from the lyrics have been included):

Dead Prez: - Sellin D.O.P.E.: Turn off the Radio: The Mixtape Vol. 1 - 2002 (4:08)

Ask my aunt and my brother and my stressed out mother

How realistic it gets it"s sadistic

Statistics show it"s sick how we livin

The one thing bigger than dope games is prisons

One million niggas inside

Over three million is tied and plus the president lied

Because the white house is the rock house

Uncle sam the pusha man

This is for my people on the island

Jedi Mind Tricks: - A History of Violence: Trail of Lies - 2008 (4:28)

Turn the television off, cousin, it"s a tool for them to clog the mind

Conservatism and Liberalism they divide the line

the natural feelings of a child will still be common kind

then they show you ads for the marines and they decide its time

so they can send you to a war behind they fog of crime

then send you homeless in a limb and not provide a dime

and the news tell you that cops is on the block for people

I"mma put it simple and plain, cops is evil

take the television show cops for example

that"s the shit that they want America to watch and sample

never showing you how dirty that they really is

and that they hide behind they badge and that they really bitch

I aint never met a pig in my life,

and I aint want to catch a body on the jig of my knife

yeah, that"s another fucking topic for another day

I"m gonna try to tell you how they get you in another way

they tell you that there"s something wrong with you, you need they drugs

but there ain"t nothing fucking wrong with you, they thieving thugs

they sell drugs and commercials at the same time

lock a motherfucker up for the same crime

South park Mexican: - Never Change: The System - 2001 (4:53)

99 percent of all criminals are dope dealers

get busted by bullets or fuckin squeelers

And the One percent that made it was pure luck

but even he'll tell that his life aint worth a fuck

cause in his mind he was caught a thousand times

and in his mind he was shot a thousand times

Without peace there can be no happiness

I wear a cross around my neck like the catholics

Im not sure exaclty what my religion is

I just know I thank god for my little kids

this is the baddest sellin drugs like sum guinnie pigs

then they arrest us after we done make it big

they take our money our cars and our houses

now tell me whos really sellin the ounces

and any cash that we might have hidden

goes to the system tryin to stay out of prison

Immortal Technique : - Revolutionary Vol. 2: The 4th Branch - 2003 (5:19)

The voice of racism preaching the gospel is devilish

A fake church called the prophet Muhammad a terrorist

Forgetting God is not a religion, but a spiritual bond

And Jesus is the most quoted prophet in the Qu'ran

They bombed innocent people, tryin' to murder Saddam

When you gave him those chemical weapons to go to war with Iran

This is the information that they hold back from Peter Jennings

Cause Condoleeza Rice is just a new age Sally Hemmings

I break it down with critical language and spiritual anguish

The Judas I hang with, the guilt of betraying Christ

You murdered and stole his religion, and painting him white

Translated in psychologically tainted philosophy

Conservative political right wing, ideology

Glued together sloppily, the blasphemy of a nation

Got my back to the wall, cause I'm facin' assassination

Guantanamo Bay, federal incarceration

How could this be, the land of the free, home of the brave?

Indigenous holocaust, and the home of the slaves

Corporate America, dancin' offbeat to the rhythm

You really think this country, never sponsored terrorism?

Human rights violations, we continue the saga

El Savador and the contras in Nicaragua

And on top of that, you still wanna take me to prison

Just cause I won't trade humanity for patriotism

Blackalicious: - The Craft - 2005 (3:35)

This Craft, this beat, this rhyme, this vibe

This style, they say music gives new life

From a source inside that is forever flowin'

This stage, this mic, this crowd, this show

This life, I've been given a gift tonight

And for that, I vow to be a vessel

[Gift of Gab - Verse One]

I didn't have to be, given the gift to rip

I'll never master me, I know that it's from Him

or Her or It, dimensions that sit

Waitin' to sift through me, I fall short, still it hits me swift

I didn't have to see, I coulda hit the lick

I coulda drifted it quick, I coulda quit so quick

It's really a trip, I guess I was picked

I don't know what I did to deserve a ride like this (Damn!)

I didn't have to eat, I coulda been so thin

I didn't have to be, quoting these sentences

I didn't have to reap, the work put in but then

even the work in itself was such a blessin

I didn't have to see, the planet tip to tip

I didn't have to make, a livin' writ to writ

I didn't have to dream and then begin to live it

And for that, I vow to be a vessel

[Chorus]

This Craft, this beat, this rhyme, this vibe

This style, they say music gives new life

From a source inside that is forever flowin'

This stage, this mic, this crowd, this show

This life, I've been given a gift tonight

And for that, I vow to be a vessel

[Verse Two]

I give thanks for my rhymin' ability

I don't front like it's not a responsibility

I can open a mind, if the youth will listen to me

I'm not goin' to front, like I'm on some killin' spree

and as hard as the times are, God is livin' through beats

that come not from minds, but that travel through spiritual reasons

Some of the time, I feel like, it's not even me

No mon-ey can buy gateways to infinity

Still I'm hun-gry to shine, when I know I should let it be

I want but I have, every single thing that we need

So help me align self with soul and then I'll be free

To sculpt and design verbal styles and experience freedom

[Chorus]

This Craft, this beat, this rhyme, this vibe

This style, they say music gives new life

From a source inside that is forever flowin'

This stage, this mic, this crowd, this show

This life, I've been given a gift tonight

And for that, I vow to be a vessel

[Chief Xcel samples]

"Let go, do what's in front of you"

"Then, let go, then do what's in front of you"

[Verse Three]

This ain't leisure, although it feels

It is a duty, a way to live, another way to give

Another way to just, have communion

With the source of the sun and moon and, a way to pay the bills

Displayin' skills, I take it REAL serious

The vibe's so mysterious, not just one more day to kill

..and I could lose my connection

if I do not respect it enough, fffade away it will

Day to day it gives energies

That replenish me, if I believe and I say it will

and act on it, 'cause action is the key to freedom

Only way to be a leader, lead by the way you live

[Chorus 3X]

This Craft, this beat, this rhyme, this vibe

This style, they say music gives new life

From a source inside that is forever flowin'

This stage, this mic, this crowd, this show

This life, I've been given a gift tonight

And for that, I vow to be a vessel

Cramdown Shows How Congress (Still) Really Works

For those who need a 10,000 foot overview of the debate over the cramdown legislation, I highly suggest this recent Businessweek cover story. Not only does it explain the issue and how banks are effectively exacerbating the foreclosure crisis, it shows the ugly side of how Congress still works. By that I mean it shows that in debates over issues of money and corporate power, banks are treated as the most important players of all - more important than the public at large.
For a taste, here's what I mean:

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who since 2007 had led unsuccessful efforts in Congress to give bankruptcy judges authority to modify home loans, dispatched his senior economic policy adviser, Brad J. McConnell, to talk with lobbyists for JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. "Each agreed to take [the idea] back to their folks to see what they could do," says a person familiar with the talks...

By the time McConnell talked to the JPMorgan and BofA representatives the next day, however, "they had gone on full defense mode and started to complain about how lousy a deal Citi had struck," says the person familiar with the exchanges. Bank opposition...

In the following weeks, banking lobbyists launched a renewed attack on the cramdown legislation, enlisting as an ally Republican Representative Lamar Smith of Texas, among others. Apart from Citi, "the industry remains united in that bankruptcy cramdown would destabilize the market" by creating widespread uncertainty about the value of numerous troubled mortgages, says Steve O'Connor, senior vice-president for government relations at the Mortgage Bankers Assn. His group is distributing talking points to key congressional aides laying out reasons why "Congress should defeat bankruptcy reform legislation."...

Industry lobbyists are organizing home state bankers to pressure moderate Democrats they hope will be receptive to limiting the kinds of loans eligible for cramdown. One target: Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana.

There's a lot in this passage - but I think the most important part is how lawmakers are still integrally involving corporate lobbyists in their legislative efforts to deal with the economic crisis. I don't mean to pick on Durbin - on this issue (and on many) he's been great. I mean to highlight the enduring corruption of the process itself.

It's stunning, really - these lobbyists represent the same corporations that ran the economy into the ground, and yet Congress still feels the need to ask their permission to go ahead with legislation to stop their most egregious practices.

Why isn"t the oil industry bailing out the auto sector? End of Suburbia: Who Killed the Electric Car?

Importance of The Big Three

SGeneral Motors, Ford and Chrysler weren't labelled the Big Three just because they produced the most vehicles in North America. As giant employers, they had big influence, energizing entire economies with their big union wages and benefits packages. As giant manufacturers, they created style. Status was instantly signalled by black Lincolns and pink Corvettes. Seatbelts, reduced vehicle emissions and electric cars had to wait until the carmakers were good and ready. As giant political contributors, they had big power. The L.A. Times recently calculated that since 1990, the auto industry as a whole has donated $100 million US to Republicans and $34 million to Democrats.

This would explain why, on Thursday, US President Barack Obama stated that:

SWe are committed to the goal of a re-tooled, re-imagined auto industry that can compete and win Millions of jobs depend on it. Scores of communities depend on it. And I believe the nation that invented (whoops) the automobile cannot walk away from it.

Collapse of The Big Three

GM, Sthe nation's biggest domestic automaker said Thursday it lost $30.9 billion for the full year and expects to state in its upcoming annual report whether its auditors believe the company remains a going concern."

SGM's loss for 2008 was the deepest among Detroit-based carmakers. Ford lost $14.6bn, while Chrysler, controlled by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, fell $8bn into the red.

SThe automakers were promised a total of $17.4 billion in direct loans from Washington and they had to present restructuring plans by Feb. 17, 2009, if they wanted a second installment. While Ford opted out of the process, saying it doesn't need a loan just yet, the plans GM and Chrysler came up with are costly.

SGM said it would need up to $30 billion from the U.S. Treasury Department to continue operating. GM has already received $13.4 billion of the money, but the other $16.6 billion would be new. Chrysler wants $2 billion on top of the $4 billion it has already received and the $3 billion it is expecting from Washington.

Profits for The Oil Industry

In 2008, five of the relatively smallest Oil and Gas Companies in the world; Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips reported record profits of over $123 billion.

So just one year"s worth of profits for the oil industry is approximately three times what the auto industry is asking for in their bailout package. If these five companies bailed out the US auto manufacturers, they would still be able to report billions in profit.

Exxon Mobil's staggering $40.6 billion earnings for 2007 Sbeat its own one-year-old record for the biggest corporate profits ever by 3 percent. Put together with the announcement by the No. 2 U.S. oil company, Chevron, of an $18.7 billion year, up 9 percent over 2006, plus the earlier results of Shell and ConocoPhillips, and that's more than $100 billion in profits from four companies.

And just last month, Exxon Mobil reported the largest annual profit in U.S. history, Smaking $45.22 billion on the back of record oil prices The company reported total revenue in 2008 of over $477 billion, giving the company a profit margin of about 9%.

Auto Sector Bailout

That gives us a pretty good idea of what type of numbers we are dealing with, so here is my question: Since the oil industry is making record profits and the auto sector is on the verge of bankruptcy, shouldn"t the oil industry, instead of the US citizen, bailout the auto sector, especially considering how interconnected their business models happen to be?

The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and The Collapse of The American Dream (1:17:37)

Who Killed the Electric Car? (1:32:27)

Keep in mind that if you apply the Iraq war multiplier to the bailouts, then all bets are off. Just wanted to through that out there.

Former Felons May Regain Right to Vote in Countrys Strictest States

Cross-Posted at Project Vote's Voting Matter's Blog

Weekly Voting Rights News Update

by Erin Ferns

Hundreds of thousands of former felons may regain their voting rights in two of the country's most restrictive states this year. As predicted last month, disenfranchisement reform is an election issue that is quietly gaining momentum as policymakers in Virginia and Kentucky battle for restoration of voting rights.
The two states are currently the only states in the nation that permanently disenfranchise all felony offenders. Virginia, however, has permitted certain former felons to apply for restoration, which then has to be approved by the governor, according to the Virginian Pilot last week. With less than 10,000 Virginians having regained voting rights under the last four governorships and at least 297,901 still disenfranchised, it appears more has to be done. But it appears this will not be accomplished without a fight.

Last week, the Virginia Senate passed one measure and defeated another that would restore voting rights, the Pilot reported. Constitutional amendment SJ 273, a measure that would give the General Assembly "constitutional power to restore voting rights to non-violent felons," is now in the House. However, an arguably more effective measure "that would automatically restore voting rights once a felon completes their sentence and subsequent parole or probation" died on a 19-19 vote. "Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, who presides in the Senate, broke the tie and voted against it."

Nationally, more than five million people are not allowed to vote as a result of a past felony conviction. Policies on felony re-enfranchisement among the 50 states are so inconsistent as to create confusion among, not only those former offenders who wish to regain the right to vote, but also the very officials charged with implementing the laws. Fair and consistent felony re-enfranchisement laws can contribute to the rehabilitation process, and reduce the harmful impact on low-income and minority communities where a disproportionately high number of individuals are disenfranchised due to felony convictions. With that, voting rights advocates are pushing for automatic post-incarceration restoration of voting rights, as we reported in last month's blog entry.

Under a system of automatic post-incarceration restoration of rights, "citizens released from prison would be immediately eligible to vote while on probation and parole, as are those who are sentenced to probation without serving any time in prison," according to a 2008 report by Erika Wood of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. "These citizens would be permitted to register in precisely the same way as other eligible citizens, without submission of special paperwork."

"Restoring the right to vote to ex-offenders is an integral aspect of reintegration into society," according to a 2007 Project Vote report, which notes a disproportionate over-representation of low-income and minority citizens in the criminal justice system. "Consistent policies are necessary to prevent large-scale disenfranchisement not only of the ex-offenders themselves, but also of the communities to which they belong. Society as a whole benefits when a representative government truly represents all its citizens."

While the Virginia bill has support from both parties, it "must travel a difficult path to become law," the Pilot reports. "The first step is being approved by the Republican-controlled House of Delegates that has already killed similar proposals this year."

Another fight is expected in Kentucky, where as many as 186,000 former felons may be able to vote again if House Bill 70 "gets the support it needs from lawmakers," according to local broadcast news outlet, WHAS 11. The bill would amend state law that permanently disenfranchises all felony offenders to restore voting rights after completion of sentence. The bill is now in the Senate.

The Great Derangement: A Late-Night Thank You to Our (Vaguely Frightening) Hate Stalkers

I've recently become aware that I have a few blog stalkers - ie. people who spend inordinate amounts of time blogging about how much they hate my writing (see here, here, here, here and here for just a few recent examples). Evidently, these people have oodles of time on their hands (and personally, I think the funniest of them are those who still insist Hillary Clinton never supported NAFTA, despite Clinton's own repeated public speeches promoting NAFTA). But I just want to give them a shout out - I sincerely love them all, both because they are providing a few extra links to OpenLeft, and because at a level far deeper than meta-narrative navel gazing, they reflect the broader societal anger that I think could make this the transformative historical moment we all want it to be.
On the link score - hey, the more traffic, the better. It's kinda like that exchange from the movie "Private Parts" about Howard Stern. After the station manager says "the average Howard Stern fan listens for an hour and 10 minutes" he then indignantly recounts that "the average Stern hater listens for 2 and a half hours a day." I don't aim to be Howard Stern, but the principle from that exchange is right-on. We'll take the traffic from the stalkers - traffic is traffic, after all, and readers are readers (and check it out - OpenLeft's traffic has been awesome of late).

But beyond just the self-interest of having blog stalkers inadvertently help us with traffic, I want to reiterate that I think the frenzied rage that's out there - whether directed at me, OpenLeft, or at any other progressive institution - is to be expected in times like this.

The country is coming apart, we're handing over $8 or $9 trillion to Wall Street, the government - as I and many others repeatedly warned - is being stacked with those who engineered this crisis, and people are violently angry. And so some of the angriest are desperate for scapegoats and conspiracy theories to help them make sense of it all. My good buddy Matt Taibbi documented this pretty well in his last book - the fringe left (from the LaRouchies to the "everyone is awful" Naderites to the Obama-hating Clintonites) and the fringe right (from the anti-immigrant lunatics to the militia sympathizers to the libertarian ideologues) find common cause in turning their righteous frustration at the Establishment into chest-thumping anger at phantom demons that seem more easy to slay than the massive institutions and powers that have destroyed the country.

And so if I or OpenLeft or any other good progressive institution/voice serves as one of those proxies that seems more easy and fun and tangible to scapegoat than giant concepts like The Government or The Establishment or The System or towering cultural icons like Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton or George W. Bush, then, at a certain level, that's really OK with me. And I don't say that in any kind of martyr-like, please-fee-bad-for-me kind of way - I mean it sincerely.

If, for instance, the fringe left needs to blame me for Hillary Clinton losing to Barack Obama; or Hillary Clinton stupidly campaigning for NAFTA and the Iraq War; or Ralph Nader not being able to mount a real presidential campaign in a money-dominated system; or Barack Obama not fulfilling his campaign promises; that's fine by me. I can take it, even if I don't agree with it, even if I can acknowledge (like most rational human beings) that such a line of thinking is crazy, insane and absurd.

I can take it because it is entirely predictable in what Taibbi calls "The Great Derangement" - that is, in a country whose political system has made people feel so desperately powerless that they need delusional theories to make them feel they have some shred of control over the nation's destiny. If me serving as a punching bag helps make people feel they have some shred of control or vested interest in political engagement, then that's ultimately a good thing. Indeed, in Rules for Radicals, Saul Alinsky says that anyone truly committed to organizing and activism and political empowerment needs - at times - to be willing to serve as such a punching bag for precisely this reason.

The anger that's welling up across the country is real and it needs to be channeled somewhere, and if some of it is being channeled here at us, that's ultimately a positive. Why? Because for every one of the stalkers who has gone completely off the deep end - for every sociopath who spends oodles of time writing whacked-out Unabomber-like manifestos blaming me, or another individual writer, or a blog or or the progressive movement for the end of civilization in a country where individual progressive writers and blogs and movements are still incredibly outgunned by the monied Establishment - my guess is that there are 10 people just as angry but far more sane who can be brought into the fold to channel their anger into the kinds of constructive causes and movements that I have devoted my career to, that this community at OpenLeft is all about and that will ultimately bring lasting change to America.

UPDATE: Within moments of this diary posting, one of my most devout stalkers requested that I link to an extra one of his/her stalker posts. The timing, of course, reiterates the stalky-ness of it all. But in the interest of obliging, here's that link calling me a blind Obama loyalist. I'm guessing you'll find it pretty funny, if you've read any of my work.
