There has been a lot of talk lately regarding one of the main elements of Hip-Hop, Rap: Sthe rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes, wordplay, and poetry.⬝
This discussion has even reached the presidential palace. In 2008 Obama stated that:
SHip-Hop is not just a mirror of what is, it should also be a reflection of what can be⬦ Imagine something different, imagine communities that aren"t torn up by violence, imagine communities where we are respecting our women, imagine communities where knowledge and reading and academic excellence are valued. Imagine communities where fathers are doing right by their kids. That"s also something that has to be reflected.SArt can"t just be a rear view mirror, it should have a headlight out there, you know, pointing towards where we need to go. [So Hip-Hop needs to have] the audacity of hope.⬝
Based on the above comments, I can only assume that Obama is in search of hip-hop with a positive message. He is looking for leadership through music that can help us build sustainable communities for future generations - music that not only reflects reality, but also provides us with solutions. As he puts it, hip-hop that has the Saudacity of hope⬝.
Obama"s search is admirable. One of the best ways to disseminate information and help improve our society is by sharing a positive message through music. After all, it is not just change that we want, but positive change.
Being a hip-hop aficionado, I believe that I can help Obama in this search.
Below you will find some amazing hip-hop that you will most likely never hear on commercial corporate mainstream media: the real thing, hip-hop at its best sharing a positive message that has the Saudacity of hope⬝ (excerpts from the lyrics have been included):
Dead Prez: - Sellin D.O.P.E.: Turn off the Radio: The Mixtape Vol. 1 - 2002 (4:08)
Ask my aunt and my brother and my stressed out mother
How realistic it gets it"s sadistic
Statistics show it"s sick how we livin
The one thing bigger than dope games is prisons
One million niggas inside
Over three million is tied and plus the president lied
Because the white house is the rock house
Uncle sam the pusha man
This is for my people on the island
Jedi Mind Tricks: - A History of Violence: Trail of Lies - 2008 (4:28)
Turn the television off, cousin, it"s a tool for them to clog the mind
Conservatism and Liberalism they divide the line
the natural feelings of a child will still be common kind
then they show you ads for the marines and they decide its time
so they can send you to a war behind they fog of crime
then send you homeless in a limb and not provide a dime
and the news tell you that cops is on the block for people
I"mma put it simple and plain, cops is evil
take the television show cops for example
that"s the shit that they want America to watch and sample
never showing you how dirty that they really is
and that they hide behind they badge and that they really bitch
I aint never met a pig in my life,
and I aint want to catch a body on the jig of my knife
yeah, that"s another fucking topic for another day
I"m gonna try to tell you how they get you in another way
they tell you that there"s something wrong with you, you need they drugs
but there ain"t nothing fucking wrong with you, they thieving thugs
they sell drugs and commercials at the same time
lock a motherfucker up for the same crime
South park Mexican: - Never Change: The System - 2001 (4:53)
99 percent of all criminals are dope dealers
get busted by bullets or fuckin squeelers
And the One percent that made it was pure luck
but even he'll tell that his life aint worth a fuck
cause in his mind he was caught a thousand times
and in his mind he was shot a thousand times
Without peace there can be no happiness
I wear a cross around my neck like the catholics
Im not sure exaclty what my religion is
I just know I thank god for my little kids
this is the baddest sellin drugs like sum guinnie pigs
then they arrest us after we done make it big
they take our money our cars and our houses
now tell me whos really sellin the ounces
and any cash that we might have hidden
goes to the system tryin to stay out of prison
Immortal Technique : - Revolutionary Vol. 2: The 4th Branch - 2003 (5:19)
The voice of racism preaching the gospel is devilish
A fake church called the prophet Muhammad a terrorist
Forgetting God is not a religion, but a spiritual bond
And Jesus is the most quoted prophet in the Qu'ran
They bombed innocent people, tryin' to murder Saddam
When you gave him those chemical weapons to go to war with Iran
This is the information that they hold back from Peter Jennings
Cause Condoleeza Rice is just a new age Sally Hemmings
I break it down with critical language and spiritual anguish
The Judas I hang with, the guilt of betraying Christ
You murdered and stole his religion, and painting him white
Translated in psychologically tainted philosophy
Conservative political right wing, ideology
Glued together sloppily, the blasphemy of a nation
Got my back to the wall, cause I'm facin' assassination
Guantanamo Bay, federal incarceration
How could this be, the land of the free, home of the brave?
Indigenous holocaust, and the home of the slaves
Corporate America, dancin' offbeat to the rhythm
You really think this country, never sponsored terrorism?
Human rights violations, we continue the saga
El Savador and the contras in Nicaragua
And on top of that, you still wanna take me to prison
Just cause I won't trade humanity for patriotism
Blackalicious: - The Craft - 2005 (3:35)
This Craft, this beat, this rhyme, this vibe
This style, they say music gives new life
From a source inside that is forever flowin'
This stage, this mic, this crowd, this show
This life, I've been given a gift tonight
And for that, I vow to be a vessel[Gift of Gab - Verse One]
I didn't have to be, given the gift to rip
I'll never master me, I know that it's from Him
or Her or It, dimensions that sit
Waitin' to sift through me, I fall short, still it hits me swift
I didn't have to see, I coulda hit the lick
I coulda drifted it quick, I coulda quit so quick
It's really a trip, I guess I was picked
I don't know what I did to deserve a ride like this (Damn!)
I didn't have to eat, I coulda been so thin
I didn't have to be, quoting these sentences
I didn't have to reap, the work put in but then
even the work in itself was such a blessin
I didn't have to see, the planet tip to tip
I didn't have to make, a livin' writ to writ
I didn't have to dream and then begin to live it
And for that, I vow to be a vessel[Chorus]
This Craft, this beat, this rhyme, this vibe
This style, they say music gives new life
From a source inside that is forever flowin'
This stage, this mic, this crowd, this show
This life, I've been given a gift tonight
And for that, I vow to be a vessel[Verse Two]
I give thanks for my rhymin' ability
I don't front like it's not a responsibility
I can open a mind, if the youth will listen to me
I'm not goin' to front, like I'm on some killin' spree
and as hard as the times are, God is livin' through beats
that come not from minds, but that travel through spiritual reasons
Some of the time, I feel like, it's not even me
No mon-ey can buy gateways to infinity
Still I'm hun-gry to shine, when I know I should let it be
I want but I have, every single thing that we need
So help me align self with soul and then I'll be free
To sculpt and design verbal styles and experience freedom[Chorus]
This Craft, this beat, this rhyme, this vibe
This style, they say music gives new life
From a source inside that is forever flowin'
This stage, this mic, this crowd, this show
This life, I've been given a gift tonight
And for that, I vow to be a vessel[Chief Xcel samples]
"Let go, do what's in front of you"
"Then, let go, then do what's in front of you"[Verse Three]
This ain't leisure, although it feels
It is a duty, a way to live, another way to give
Another way to just, have communion
With the source of the sun and moon and, a way to pay the bills
Displayin' skills, I take it REAL serious
The vibe's so mysterious, not just one more day to kill
..and I could lose my connection
if I do not respect it enough, fffade away it will
Day to day it gives energies
That replenish me, if I believe and I say it will
and act on it, 'cause action is the key to freedom
Only way to be a leader, lead by the way you live[Chorus 3X]
This Craft, this beat, this rhyme, this vibe
This style, they say music gives new life
From a source inside that is forever flowin'
This stage, this mic, this crowd, this show
This life, I've been given a gift tonight
And for that, I vow to be a vessel
